EMWP FELLOW PUBLISHES ARTICLE

EMWP Fellow Julie Weaver has had an article published in the January 2010 issue of Science and Children, an NSTA publication.  The article is entitled "Clues to the Past." Julie explains:  "Students love a mystery. So what do America’s most majestic bird, a bag of habitat clues, and a soft-shelled egg have in common?" Her article includes an easy-to-do inquiry activity that engages students as they connect clues to problem-solve how the bald eagle reached the brink of extinction in the 1960s in the lower 48 states. "It was designed to give students an opportunity to wonder, discuss, and discover interactions in habitats,"  says the author.  We are proud of the published author from our group!

EMWP VISITS NWP IN ORLANDO

Members of the Endless Mountains Writing Project fled the arctic weather of Pennsylvania to attend the annual National Writing Project Conference, held this year in Orlando.  Accompanying directors Dr. Nanci Werner-Burke and Dick Heyler were teacher consultants Bobbi Button, Robin Glowatz, Lisa Higham, Karin Knaus, Cindy Lisowski, Tom Perry, Jessica Spencer, Jane Spohn and Bobbi Van Druff.  Each attendee participated in several workshops presented by the National Writing
Project, as well as making presentations at the National Council of Teachers of
English Conference, held concurrently with the NWP meeting.

EMWP FELLOW TRAVELS TO LITTLE ROCK, ARKANSAS

Picture
Tom Perry traveled to Little Rock, Arkansas to represent the Endless Mountains Writing Project at the Rural Sites Network Conference on March 11-12, 2011.  While there he took part in the Argenta District Writing Marathon and attended several sessions on the use and enhancement of Digital Literacy in our local schools.  The keynote speaker for the opening night of the conference was Spirit Trickey Rowan, daughter of Minnijean Brown (one of the Little Rock nine, the first African-American students to cross the lines of segregation by attending Central High School in Little Rock).  She spoke on the qualities that her mother embodied and how we can pass those same traits onto our students.  After her speech, Mike Thomas, history teacher of the year in Arkansas, presented his play, Digging Up Arkansas, a historical view of Arkansas's past and its progress towards the future.  The keynote speaker for the second morning was Lee Anne Bell.  She presented her work titled,
Storytelling for Social Justice.  This piece shows the power of stories to change the
landscape of race and racism.
